📜 Basic rules of the competition

The band must be officially based in Bulgaria.
At least 80% of members must be Bulgarian residents.
All musicians must be at least 18 years old.
Participation is mainly for underground and developing metal bands.
Bands apply with demos/recordings and online materials.
After a pre-selection, a jury chooses the finalists for the live concert.
The winner receives a slot at Wacken Open Air and festival passes for the band.

🌍 International jury

Interestingly, the selection in Bulgaria is made by an international jury, not just local organizers. For 2026, the jury includes:

Israel Pelayio
Eric Hutchence
Frank Nagel

🎤 Why is Wacken Metal Battle important?

The format itself is quite serious – this isn't just a club concert, but a real international system for discovering new metal bands. Different countries have local battles, and then the winners play on a separate stage at Wacken in front of an international audience and industry jury.

In my opinion, formats like this are extremely important for the Bulgarian scene. Bulgarian metal bands often have quality but lack access to large audiences and contacts. Wacken Metal Battle actually opens the door to the European scene. Especially for extreme metal, this is one of the few places where a band from Bulgaria can be noticed internationally without a huge label behind them.
