🎸 Mike DiMeo – a name that few Deep Purple fans associate with the band. Yet in 1992, he was a hair's breadth away from becoming their vocalist. Ritchie Blackmore had taken a liking to him, but musical and personal conflicts within the band thwarted that union.

In the early 90s, Deep Purple were looking for a replacement for Joe Lynn Turner. Blackmore, who was always searching for new sounds, came across a young vocalist from New York – Mike DiMeo. Two days later, DiMeo was already in a studio in Connecticut, alongside bassist Roger Glover.

They recorded three songs that were later to be included on the album "The Battle Rages On". DiMeo's voice fit perfectly with Blackmore and Glover's music. But the rest of the band – especially keyboardist Jon Lord – disagreed. They felt DiMeo was too young and inexperienced for the scale of Deep Purple.

The record label BMG also pushed for the return of the classic lineup with Ian Gillan. So the tracks with DiMeo's vocals were scrapped, Gillan returned and re-recorded the songs.

🎥 About the video: Unfortunately, there is no publicly available video of Mike DiMeo's audition for Deep Purple. The demo recordings from 1992 were never officially released and exist only as rare bootlegs among fans. Nevertheless, his story remains one of the most intriguing episodes in the band's career.

DiMeo didn't lose faith. In 1996, he joined the legendary band Riot (later Riot V), with whom he recorded several albums and established himself as one of the most talented voices in power metal.

Today he is an active musician, and his story remains one of the most intriguing episodes in Deep Purple's career – about the voice that could have changed everything but remained in the shadows.

🎟️ Deep Purple are coming to Sofia on September 29, 2026 at Arena Armeec. This is a rare opportunity to hear live some of the most iconic songs in rock history. Tickets – via Eventim.
